Free leopard-print bar to good home (pick up in Pasadena) [16 Mar 2008|08:29am]

A full-size bar with interior shelving, covered in imitation leopard skin. I would keep it if I could, but I can't.

It's 8' long, 4' tall, 3' wide, and it's solidly built. Weighs a couple of hundred pounds, and it's made of wood, fake leopard fur, and vinyl upholstery. Needs to be cleaned, countertop needs refinishing, got four broken casters on the bottom. But it's free to a good home. If you like Tiki, this is for you!

All you need to do is pick it up ASAP. You'll need a truck and at least two strong people. First come, first served. Contact me for details.

Freetime profile of the Jetsetter Lounge [06 Jan 2007|02:25pm]

Hey everyone,

Our Freetime video blog has done a recent episode of "Tiki Tips" which features the unique and fantastic Jetsetter Lounge in South Florida. The Jetsetter merges space age and tiki style to produce the perfect atmosphere for swank hipsters. This episode looks at a bit of the history behind the style as well. Have a look and please give us your thoughts!

Thanks, and apologies for cross posting.

closing [21 Sep 2006|12:27pm]

i just wanted to make a quick post for anyone in the los angeles area...
my all time favorite bar, the lucky tiki, is closing tomorrow!
if you haven't had time to check it out i suggest you do it now!
rumor has it that they will re-open at another location in the future, but for now there is no more tiki.

they're located in mission hills on chatsworth st. near where the 118 and 5 meet.
you can find more info at

and just a note:
the tiki can be a little seedy, so if you don't like dive bars i wouldn't suggest going.

Trader Vic's [14 May 2006|08:16am]

[ mood | chipper ]

Hullo! Just joined the community and am very excited to meet other fans of teh tiki.

I am quite excited that Scottsdale's Valley Ho Hotel is getting a Trader Vic's in June! I plan to be there with my favorite tiki mug in hand when it opens.

Anyone been to a Trader Vic's lately? Is it the tiki heaven experience you expected? Did the Mai Tais enthrall? (That being the primary reason for going to Trader Vic's, I figure.)

Has anyone ever seen this movie?

I got this link from a board I frequent. It is naughty but not nude. You can see maybe the side of breasts but nothing too bad. Gotta love the Sea God!!

Squeeeee!! Have you guys seen this little bundle of cuteness??

From the write-up: "Aw…. look at that cute little tiki. He looks so soft and vulnerable. There’s no way he could be responsible for a curse on anybody. He just wants to come home with you and be your friend. But as soon as you fall asleep…."

Just a follow-up on monimania's recent post: I went by my local Big Lots and they had the neatest lime green tiki cups and some adorable Shagesque statues and other stuff. I guess they all carry slightly different stuff as I didn't find any tiki signs, although they may have just been all bought up. Anyhow, definately worth checking out if y'all are able. Bonus find: embroidered bar towel featuring a Shriner-like monkey in a fez serving bananas. Thanks monimania for the heads up!

My latest tiki obsession...shadowboxes! Spent much time trolling eBay and antique shops to put these together. Click on thumnails for a larger picture if you wish.

The Luau-Beverly Hills, CA. Includes two vintage salt and pepper shakers as well as two vintage matchbooks with matches intact. A reproduction dinner and drink menu (photocopied from original vintage menus).

Kahiki-Columbus, OH. Includes vintage menu, swizzle sticks and wooden matches as well as a postcard both of the restaurant, and from the last night party.

Trader Vics-St. Louis, MO. From my hometown, includes vintage menu, ashtray, swizzle sticks, matchbooks, postcard postmarked 1969, and more modern chopsticks and napkin.

The start of my matchbook cover collection. Favorites include the Mainlander (again, from St. Louis) and Kona Kai (from Kansas City where I now live) as well as the Mai Kai, Kon Tiki, South Seas and Hawaiian Village. I also like one I got of Chin Tiki in Detroit, but its not pictured.
